Private midwife home birth safety

frequently asked questions

  • A private Midwife has done extra study, and three years of clinical experience and is endorsed to prescribe medications and order and interpret diagnostic testing. Private midwives also can offer homebirth as an option of care for women.

  • Continuity of care (Coc) is well-researched as the ‘gold standard’ of care in maternity services. Research shows women who receive Coc report higher satisfaction and significant improvement in outcomes for mothers and babies. Coc means having the same midwife or care provider at each appointment, birth and postnatal visit. This type of service is in contrast to the common fragmented care model provided by most hospitals. Coc allows space to build trust, get to know each other and receive individualised care and support right for you.

  • Homebirth has been studied in large numbers and there is no known increase in poor outcomes for mother or baby for women planning to birth at home. There is however strong evidence showing improved outcomes for women birthing at home. This includes a higher rate of vaginal birth, less likelihood for a postpartum haemorrhage, and more. Homebirth midwives bring emergency equipment ready if complications arise. Most of the time, no assistance at all is required. Midwives are also highly trained to identify any arising complications and facilitate timely transfer if needed.
